Nice!

havent heard the original, but this one was a pleasure to listen to and it was real laidback. Though the chord progression was a bit simple on the piano tho and that you could take your personal style and spice it up a bit tho! It also lacks a rhythm structure. Also the timpani rhythm gets repetitive too, I would say mess with that some more and vary it up a bit throughout.

It's a great track for you to start your own production on if you havent already. Good luck and keep producing!

Goes with the video suprisingly well

Wow, when I first heard the song I didnt expect it to go well with the video, as I personally thought it would be something with a more relaxing, yet curious theme but you did a great job with sequencing it to the movie.

You're really good at making the voices flow smoothly across the rhythm section. The timpanis do a good job at sparking some sense of seriousness while the glockenspiel/mallet percussion come into alleviate some of the stress, which moves fantastically with the video.

No criticisms on the composition itself- there's no lower end really, a contrabass or lower cello would be great to make the sound more fuller. except I think the brass could use more dynamics, especially more louder notes as they kinda off shy themself under the strings.

also, why do all the classical composers on NG compose in Cmin!?

good song man!!! good luck in the contest!

MusicalRocky responds:

Yeah, I figured most people would think of calmness when they saw the video. I saw the distortion and dark colors as a sense of a darker theme. Plus I just love writing in minor :P

Voicing is always something I'm careful of, glad you noticed it ;] Yep it's a glockenspiel haha. :D

The lower end (basses, cellos, trombones, bassoons) is there, but quiet under the motif-esque eighth notes of the upper instruments, sometimes they're loud though, like in the beginning. Also the chords would sound significantly different without them, you'd be able to tell.

Haha C minor is cool! Also, I don't compose in it too too often. It's both Winterwind's and Mjttomb's favorite key though. That may have something to do with it :P

I'm glad you like the song! Thanks for the good luck wishes :D

fresh

good beat, love the boomy kick sample in here. Great sampling, the accordion solo works well, it makes me happy inside. it should be a bit longer. Make it longer and lay a lead melody in here to go along with the rhodes piano or maybe laydown a rap and this would be real sweet. Great sound.

Sirhc7000 responds:

Thx a lot.
I so wish I could rap, I mean anyone could essentially, but I'm not very lyrical and I dont wanna sound wack.

But thanx for da tha review.

It's real nice

I love the lyrics, real touching man. What I like is there's not a boatload of cursing, or the n-bomb, no shittalking. its nice and from the heart. Rap is not my area, but from what I hear your flow is pretty good and you have a good rapping voice. Some more FX on your voice (but not overdone, just at some points) like a louder reverb, or an echo would be great for the diversity of the song.

Did you make the beat too? It's very good, very smooth and mellow which goes with the lyrical themes. I love the percussion in the start, and the beat is nice. I think the beat could have more definition and maybe more subbass since there is no bassline in here. I like the string progression too, itts a great backup to the vocals.

I dont see why its voted so low...i thought that was a great rap. 5'd and favorited!

OBIEakaAO responds:

Thank you so much! It's downvoted prolly cause im not swearing every other word, not shit talking, or because its not mainstraim shit, also no one can get rid of 0 bombers. Glad you enjoyed it, i really apprecitate it!

coolio!

I like the DnB elements in here!

=The Good=
-The reecework is really cool! I like the one with the swelling filter.
-The other Bass synth is really catchy and carries a nice rhythm. I especially like the FX and that thing you applied at 00:9
-Cool loose snare sample....beat is also real nice, shows that you dont necessarily need breakbeats for a DnB song!
-That panning effect in the second phase was real sweet!

=The Bad=
-Maybe attach some subbass along with the bassline
-More synths in here would be nice, may some sustained strings, or a nice high pitched synth to go along with themes

So a pretty sweet track, unfortunately its not longer. Also, props for being a fellow Arizonian!

TorkKey responds:

Thanks for the review man! I greatly appreciate all the advice. I'm thinking that I'll remix it now!

Dude, I love Arizona! I was born in August and heats the only thing I know!!! YESSSS!!! It's sweet that you live in AZ also. Honestly, I was doubting anyone that uses newgrounds did. lol...

Anywho, thanks again!!!

Peace!

the bass is fine

This is an excellent track. I love the slowly moving reese and sad melodies on the keys. Some of the higher frequencies on the drums hurt a bit especially at the crash cymbals so you may want to cut those frequencies a bit. Two more suggestions: Add a subbass to go along with the reese, and applying pitch bends to the reese is really cool and it would add more diversity to this loop. Nice track tho, keep up the good work!

Teamd0m1nat3 responds:

thanks a ton for your input. i promise you there's plenty of sub bass! i chose that particular sound because it made my studio shake, it's just not that noticeable on smaller speakers. i totally agree about the drum track though, i hate it now but it was just something i settled with originally. pitch bends would be pretty cool but i just don't feel like working on this song any more since it's kinda old. be sure to check out my new stuff later this week!

Lacking

I can't say I honestly enjoyed this one too much :(

=The Good=
-The composition itself is actually very nice. Nice placing of notes, the section at 00:43 was nice and relaxing
-The pad that you use is okay, goes with the serene melodies, its got a nice soft texture

=The bad=
-The drums need to be taken out. They dont the track any good. The beat is boring and extremely simplistic. Plus the samples are lame, try searching around for more acoustic oriented or better dance samples. Also, make sure your beat is quantitized (snap to line)
-Although the notes are nice, you need to add more in here or elaborate more on the right hand melodies. the E-C notes get old, try a different combination like E-C-F and split the length up of the C note.
-Your synth seems overall muffled and low quality. A bit more reverb might help withe dryness, and a sharper EQ might polish up the sound.

some decent playing in here, but it needs some refurbishing. I hope my tips help!
well, I hope my criticisms help!

dj-rodster responds:

aright ill keep it in mind thnx man :P

what game is this from?

I know I've heard this melody somewhere before. I also like 8bit tracks so its always nice to hear people put oldschool stuff out like this :D

=The Good=
-Great composition!
-8bit sounds are nice

=The Bad=
-Doesn't entirely sound genuinely 8bit, like some of your synths are too powerful-like the sine bass seemed a bit full, try using just 1 osc wave
-Make an actual ending or loop it :D

Ideas: 8/10 Diversity: 7/10 Clarity: 8/10 Overall: 8/10

wish I had more to say, but its a good track!

MoebiusZero responds:

Thanks for the review :D
It not being entire genuinely 8bit is probally because I trew in some non-8 bit type of instruments in FL studio ^^
Wish I had more time to create a nice loop out of this, I consider remaking music a hobby and animating my job :)

As for the music it's from Final Fantasy 6, from what i've been told its only played on the final boss fight.

inb4top5 :D

Great track man, sweet synths-with that high reverb and wind filter thingy it does go with the theme very well. Cant say I was a fan of the beat tho but its just not my style I guess. and wtf @ the synth at 1:22

I would also make your snare louder as it feels a bit lost in the mix. otherwise, you pwn NG.

F-777 responds:

Haha ya that synth at 1:22 was me trying something different you know cause most songs have the same synths and stuff...it sounds pretty funny but i kept it cause its kind of catchy in my oppinion.

Thanks for the honest review man!

nice

i didnt think it was possible to revamp such a great track...but you did an excellent job man...

Love the bassline, flows great with the gill e. piano chords in the background. and of course the synth later on is a great fit too. You really did a swell job in retaining an atmospheric ambient atmosphere while pumping in the energy for a trance track.

only thing I dont like is your snare sample, you need a stronger, more snappier one I think...

well keep up the good work!
